Description
An account of the resource
The Thomas Mann house was built in 1941 for the acclaimed writer by architect J.R. Davidson. The Mann's left Germany in the 1930's and settled in the Los Angeles area, with its large expatriate community. The 5000 square foot house on over an acre of flat land in the Pacific Palisades area, contained 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms at the time of its' construction. Thomas Mann sold the house to Chester Lappen in 1953 and moved to Switzerland. After Lappen died in 2010, the house was a rental, and then placed on the market as a tear-down. The Lappen family sold the house to the German government in 2016; it will be turned into an artist retreat to complement their artist residence Villa Aurora, which is located about 6 miles from the Mann house.

Description
An account of the resource
Architect Robert Stacy-Judd designed the Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, Cailf., in the Mayan Revival style of architecture. As an early proponent of the Mayan Revival style, Stacy-Judd promoted the Aztec Hotel as the first commercial structure to be designed in this distinctive style. The hotel was built along Route 66, with cast concrete architectural features with "Mayan" motifs along the front facade. It included private hotel rooms (with private baths), shops, apartments, and a restaurant with attached outdoor patio at the back of the hotel.

Aztec Hotel: Interior presentation board
Description
An account of the resource
Colored pencil on board. Rendering of interior of lobby; this shows the original design from August 1924. This presentation board displays the full color effect that Stacy-Judd was trying to achieve with his "Mayan Revival" style. The fireplace is on the far right, with the lobby entrance doors center right, and the doors to the restroom at the center of the image. "Mayan" design motifs are shown on the walls, which were hand-drawn by Stacy-Judd.

Rudolph M. Schindler (1887-1953): Kings Road house
Subject

Southern California Architecture;
California Modern Architecture
Description
An account of the resource
The house at 835 Kings Road in Los Angeles, Calif. is considered to be one of the first 'modern' houses. It utilized concrete tilt-slab construction; Shindler built the house himself, by hand, along with his construction partner Clyde Chase. The layout of the house itself was also non-traditional-- built as a home for Schindler, his wife Pauline, and Clyde and Marian Chase, the house did not have a traditional living room or bedrooms, but contained four separate studio areas for each of the inhabitants. "Sleeping baskets" were later added to the roof as bedroom areas. This unconventional arrangement, as laid out on the original floor plans, met resistance from the Los Angeles building department, and Schindler had to change the room designations on the floor plans to conform to a more 'traditional' layout. But since Shindler and Chase built the house themselves, detailed construction documents were not used.

Rudolph M. Schindler (1887-1953): Kings Road house
Subject

Southern California Architecture;

Floor plan of the house showing the unusual arrangement of rooms. Instead of the usual living room, dining room, and bedrooms, this plan shows the four live/work spaces for Schindler, his wife Pauline, Clyde Chace, and his wife Marian Chace. Each couple had a wing of the house, with a hallway and bathroom connecting the work spaces. A communal kitchen, guest room (with attached bath and kitchen), garage, and car port make up another wing of the house.
